Game Accessibility Handbook

Video games are a cornerstone of leisure in our society. Through their power to deliver affective experiences, and often function as opportunities for connection with others, it is essential that everyone is able to play equitably. Access to games and play brings meaningful benefits, whether that’s through connection with other people, stories that touch us, or experiences that bring us joy, frustration or rewards.

Thankfully, efforts towards improving the accessibility of games have increased significantly over the past decade. Many game creators have brought accessibility into the heart of their experience, with companies like Ubisoft, PlayStation and Microsoft (and others) advancing accessibility throughout their games. These efforts have been strengthened by community resources including guides, talks, and conferences that have offered opportunities for sharing and defining best practice.

But video games are also immensely complex, it can be difficult to know where to start. This free book, created with contributors from across the games industry, serves as an extension of the support available and aims to help grow an accessibility movement within the games industry, empowering game developers to craft experiences where everyone can play. By offering perspectives rooted inside the various web of disciplines involved in making a game, this book provides a valuable resource for professionals and students seeking to improve their craft, and better understand how to bring their games to more players.
